Each of these five practical videos for grades K-12 feature Bobbie Taylor, a child development expert, and real families in realistic situations. This 40 page practical guide discusses the hospitalization of injured children from arrival at the emergency room through discharge planning for rehabilitation or home.  Topics include: preparing for hospital visits, reactions to loss, helping siblings, and practical suggestons for coping.  A Parents' Bill of Rights was written by families. E-P 14  Lash, Marilyn When Your Child Goes to School After an Injury   Exceptional Parent Mag.  ($9.95) (Grade K - 12)

This guide was written with the help of many families, educators, and professionals.  Special thanks are given to the Family Task Force of the Research and Training Center in Rehabilitation and Childhood Trauma. This practical guide is intended to be used primarily by families with children returning to school after a serious injury.  Families point out however, that regardless of the cause of the disability, children share much in common.  Therefore, the author hopes that many other families with children who have disabilities will use it.   Softcover, 66 pgs.

A manual designed to orient and educate parents about issues of service coordination and to assist families in caring for an infant or toddler with developmental delays or disabilities.  The general guidelines in this manual should help parents answer their questions about the early intervention services for their child, such terms as child assessment, developmental delay, Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP), IFSP team, and service coordination or case management, are carefully addressed.  A checklist for parents in the Appendix checks the parent's understanding of the key elements of the service system and is cross-indexed to the appropriate page for their review.  Softcover, 32 pgs. 1993

E-P 6 Emmert, Michelle  I'm the Big Sister Now   Albert Whitman & Co. ($9.95)  (Grades 1 - 6)

Nine year old Michelle describes the joys, loving times, difficulties, and other special situations involved in living with her older sister Amy Emmert, who was born severely disabled with cerebral palsy.   Hardcover, 26 pgs.  


E-P 5 Rogers, Jacqueline  The Saddest Time  Albert Whitman & Co. ($9.95)  (Grades 1 - 6)

The celebration of life and the mourning of death are both part of the human experience.  The modern child may have difficulty putting death in its proper perspective as a sad and sometimes tragic event but also the inevitable end of life.  This books helps to explains death as the inevitable end of life and provides three situations in which children experience powerful emotions when someone close to them has died.  Hardcover, 28 pgs.  


E-P 4 Mayer, Mercer  There's A Nightmare In My Closet The Dial Press. ($9.95)  (Grades Pre K - 2)

Very young men with nightmares in their closet admittedly have a problem.  Just remembering to close the closet door before going to sleep is enough to make one not want to go to bed at all.  The determined young man in this fantasy, decides to take action.  Barricaded and helmeted, with cannon and infantry at the ready, he faces his nemesis.  Nightmare turns out to be timid, cowardly, over-sensitive, and a crybaby.  In other words, hopeless.  Never daunted, our hero copes with his new problem and wins the night and a somewhat unusual roommate.  Mercer Mayer's "There's A Nightmare In My Closet", will add comfort and laughter to the tell-me-a-story hour and make going to bed and turning out the lights almost a pleasure.   Hardcover, 28 pgs, illustrated.

This disabilities awareness book helps children to explain the differences and similarities in people, especially how those with disabilities are both "Different and Alike" from children without disabilities.  It explains how some differences in people are called handicaps and goes on to discuss some of the different handicapping conditions, including: 1) Being Deaf; 2) Being Blind; 3) Having Learning Disabilities; 4) Being Physically Handicapped; 5) Being Mentally Handicapped; and 6) How to Help a Handicapped Person. E-P 2 Eberts, Marge & Gisler, Peggy  Ready For School  Meadowbrook Press ($9.95)  (Grades Pre K - K)

This well organized book helps you prepare your child for kindergarten without turning you into the teacher, or your home into a classroom.  This book tells you how to raise children who are curious, communicative, confident, and ready to learn when they get to school.  It includes a wide range of learning activities geared to the child's age - from birth to five.  Activities help build skills, including: listening, self-esteem, self-care, storytelling, problem solving, emotional control, socializing, and hand/eye coordination.  A great book for parents trying go give their children a head start.  


E-P 1  Dunn, Kathryn & Allyson Trouble With School  Woodbine House Inc.,  ($19.95)  (Grades 1-4)

The process of diagnosing a learning disability can be stressful for both the child and family members.  It's common for everyone to feel frustrated and confused during this period of adjustment.  But once everyone learns more about learning disabilities and the child begins a special education program, most families feel relieved to know what the problem is and how to work towards a solution.  Based on one family's real-life experiences with learning disabilities, "Trouble With School" follows Allison and her mother, as each tells her side of the story of diagnosing and adjusting to Allison's learning needs.
